Harry Styles revealed the deeply personal reason behind a post-concert habit that might otherwise seem like simple hygiene.
In a cover story interview with W Magazine, the British singer said he showers immediately after leaving the stage each night to help shed his onstage persona.
“When I come offstage, the first thing I do is shower, because it’s better for me to feel like I washed it off,” Styles said.
He described the heightened version of himself that emerges under the stage lights, “There’s a version [of yourself] where you come offstage and feel like, ‘Oh, I’m the guy right now.'”
Styles said that feeling dates back to the early days of his career, when he wondered, “How do I stay in this feeling — this is amazing!” Over time, however, he learned to recognize the sensation and physically let it go.
“Over the years, I’ve tried to acknowledge that is that and I can wash it off,” he explained. “You do the show, you go backstage, you shower and all of a sudden you’re n**** in this most vulnerable, almost infant-like state of yourself. It couldn’t be more different from what you were doing 10 minutes ago.”
Comparing performance to a ‘godlike position’
Styles also reflected on the psychological weight of performing for tens of thousands of fans night after night. He said standing before an arena full of adoring fans can feel like occupying a “very godlike position,” a sensation that can become dangerous if left unexamined over a long career.
“When I was younger, admitting that it’s not really about me would have been quite terrifying,” Styles said. “Now it’s actually really liberating to acknowledge that it’s so much bigger than me.”
He described concerts as shared experiences rather than moments centered solely on him. “We’re all there for the same thing,” he told W Magazine. “I’m not guiding you to me. I’m not asking you to follow me. I’m saying that I believe in the same thing that you believe in and we’re all here for that reason, which is beyond me.”
He added, “We, as the crew and the band, get to create an environment for people to have this joyous time. But we’re all there for the same thing. If you’re onstage, it’s a very godlike position.”
On public opinion and separating persona from self
The 32-year-old singer also discussed how he handles criticism and praise, saying he has learned not to fully lean into the noise.
“One of the best things anyone has told me is that comments, the bad and good, neither of them are true,” Styles said. “Some people will tell you you’re the best thing in the world and that’s not true. Some people will tell you you’re terrible and that’s also not true.”
That philosophy, along with his nightly shower ritual, reflects Styles’ broader effort to separate his public pop star persona from his private identity. The W Magazine profile was accompanied by a fashion shoot photographed by David Sims.
A sold-out residency and a new album era
The interview was published one day before Styles began a 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City on August 26. The residency is part of his Together, Together tour, his third concert tour and first since Love On Tour concluded in July 2023.
According to tour information, Together, Together began May 16 in Amsterdam and is scheduled to run through December 13 in Sydney, spanning roughly 68 shows across seven cities. The tour includes stops in London, São Paulo, Mexico City, Melbourne, Sydney and New York.
The tour supports Styles’ fourth solo studio album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., released March 6 and executive produced by longtime collaborator Kid Harpoon. Its lead single, “Aperture,” premiered January 22 ahead of the album.
Following the New York residency, Styles’ remaining dates will take him to Australia, with shows at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne and Accor Stadium in Sydney.
Career background
Styles first became known at 16 as a member of One Direction before launching a solo career that has produced four studio albums. His 2022 album Harry’s House won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
His Love On Tour, which ran from September 2021 to July 2023, ranked among the highest-grossing and most-attended concert tours in history, according to Ticketmaster’s tour archive.
