Miley Cyrus announces 10th album ‘Bass Persuades’

Miley Cyrus announced her 10th studio album, Bass Persuades, along with two rare live shows at the Hollywood Bowl, capping off several days of teasers hinting at a new musical era.

The singer shared the news on Instagram, revealing the album’s black-and-white cover art and September 18 release date. The artwork shows Cyrus from the shoulders up, holding a rose in her mouth.

“Music takes hold of us,” Cyrus wrote in her Instagram caption announcing the album. “We feel it, sing it, sometimes dance to it, let it out and carry on. It is powerful, vulnerable, sweet and strong.”

She continued, “Heart full, heartache, every part of life in between. That’s what the title means to me. Thank you for being a part of making my wildest dreams come true. I sincerely hope you love this album.”

Alongside the caption, Cyrus posted a teaser video of herself playing electric guitar in a white jumpsuit, set to a gritty, thrashing instrumental track believed to be from the new record. The video’s styling drew comparisons to PJ Harvey‘s 2009 music video for “This Is Love.”

With the Bass Persuades rollout, Cyrus has also begun performing and marketing under the mononym “Miley,” dropping her surname from her public identity. The album marks her first release through Atlantic Records after she was previously signed to Columbia Records.

The album’s tracklist, revealed on Spotify, includes 10 songs and features contributions from the band Model/Actriz and Miike Snow member Andrew Wyatt. One of the tracks featuring Model/Actriz is reportedly titled “Different Religion.”

Cyrus offered a preview of the album’s themes in an interview with Wonderland Magazine, which she guest-edited ahead of the release. “This album is a love story, but love stories are never one-dimensional. They’re always layered,” Cyrus told Wonderland Magazine.

She added, “There is definitely a romantic thread weaving through it because, like all my records, it’s a reflection of where I am in my life.”

Hollywood Bowl shows announced minutes later

Shortly after unveiling Bass Persuades, Cyrus announced that she would perform a two-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on October 16 and October 18 to celebrate the new project.

“It’s been a while,” Cyrus wrote on Instagram, calling the Hollywood Bowl her “favorite place to experience music and see [her] favorite artists.”

“I’ve sat in those seats many times, but I’ve never taken the stage,” she added. “LA is my heart, and I’m bringing it home. See you there.”

The Hollywood Bowl concerts will mark Cyrus’ first full U.S. performances since 2021, according to Rolling Stone, and her announcement indicates that the shows will feature Bass Persuades performed in its entirety. Model/Actriz is set to appear as a special guest.

Cyrus has largely stepped back from touring in recent years, instead making select one-off appearances, primarily at awards shows. Addressing her absence from the road in 2023, Cyrus said performing for fans had been “some of the best days of my life” but explained that she did not want to spend her time getting ready in a locker room or sleeping on a moving bus.

Tickets for the Hollywood Bowl shows will first be available through an American Express cardmember presale beginning at 10 a.m. PT on September 8. An artist presale will follow at 10 a.m. PT on September 9 along with a Reserved by Spotify presale for top fans.

Teaser campaign and context

Cyrus began teasing the project more than a week before the formal announcement, starting with a cryptic billboard and a social media post that read “Miley.” Fans also noticed that her Instagram handle had dropped “Cyrus.”

Cyrus further teased the campaign by purchasing a wraparound cover of the Los Angeles Times featuring only her first name and her face and by updating her official website with the same image.

The teaser campaign unfolded around the death of Cyrus’ godmother, musician Dolly Parton.

Following Parton’s death, Cyrus wrote, “The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share. I have an angel by my side. I always have.”
