Jennifer Lopez thinks the end of a relationship should be celebrated rather than mourned.

Speaking with Kareem Rahma on his “Subway Takes” series, published June 30, the singer and actress argued that breakups are the beginning of personal growth, not a sign of “failure.”

“Breakups are not a failure. I honestly feel like it’s a launchpad into your next best self,” Lopez told Rahma. “We should have a party when we break up. People should say, ‘You broke up? Congratulations,’ because one, you made a decision. Two, it was probably the best thing for everybody.”

Lopez frames heartbreak as a sign of growth 

Lopez revealed that she has experienced heartbreak from both sides but believes the person whose heart is broken ultimately benefits more.

“If you’re the one who’s being heartbroken, you’re the winner,” she said. “Because if you go around your life and you’re breaking hearts, let’s say, you’re a loser. I’ve been on both sides. We all do that. But if you’re that person, you’re never learning anything.”

She described heartbreak as the driving force behind many of her biggest personal changes.

“I just feel like the biggest growth spurts I’ve had emotionally, mentally, psychologically have always come from a heartbreak,” Lopez told Rahma. “And that’s not just in romantic relationships — that’s in work heartbreaks.”

She added that breakups force people to examine themselves. “It’s the only time you dig. You’re like, ‘What the f*** happened? How do I do this? Why do I keep doing this? Or why didn’t that happen? What could I have done better?’ You change yourself completely.”

Lopez also made it clear she does not revisit past relationships once they end, saying, “Once I’m done, you’re dead to me.”

Context behind the interview

The interview was filmed aboard New York City’s F train, the signature setting for Rahma’s “Subway Takes” series, while promoting Lopez’s film Office Romance, which premiered at The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood in Los Angeles on May 26 and is now streaming on Netflix.

During the conversation, Lopez also weighed in on New York City identity, telling Rahma that someone must be born in the city to be considered a true New Yorker.

Asked about her preferences in a partner, Lopez said personality matters more than appearance.

“I don’t discriminate,” Lopez told Rahma. “I like skinny guys. I like a chunk around the middle. I like beards, I like clean shaven, it doesn’t matter. It’s the person inside.”

Lopez’s relationship history 

Lopez has been married four times. Her most recent marriage was to actor Ben Affleck, whom she married in 2022 after rekindling their early-2000s romance. The couple separated in 2024, and their divorce was finalized in 2025.

Despite the split, they reunited on the red carpet in October 2025 while promoting Kiss of the Spider Woman.

She was previously married to Marc Anthony from 2004 to 2014. They share 18-year-old twins, Max and Emme, who recently graduated from high school.

Her earlier marriages were to Ojani Noa and Cris Judd. Lopez was also engaged to former MLB player Alex Rodriguez before ending their engagement in 2021 after nearly four years together.

During a May appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Lopez addressed speculation linking her to Office Romance costar Brett Goldstein.

“I should have done it sooner! I’ve been doing it all wrong. Trust me,” she said, adding she’s single. “I’ll meet somebody somewhere one day, if they’re good enough. I’m good right now where I’m at.”

Alongside promoting the film, Lopez has continued releasing new music. She teamed up with Brazilian DJ Alok on the dance single “Everything’s Fine,” released on June 26. Earlier that year, she collaborated with French DJ David Guetta on “Save Me Tonight.”
